We’re MQ: Transforming Mental Health. We’re a new charity with big ambitions. Our vision is a world where mental illness is understood, effectively treated, and ultimately made preventable.

We’re bringing together scientists, people affected, healthcare professionals, the mental health community and the general public to make this a reality – funding pioneering research into mental health. And in 2017 we’re launching a major awareness campaign to put our issues on the agenda.

MQ’s communications and marketing via our website, email marketing and social media will be critical to achieving these aims and we’re looking for an experienced and talented digital communications expert to lead this work.

Key responsibilities

Strategy, Planning & Performance

  • Responsibility for achieving MQ’s digital key performance indicators (KPIs) and reporting against these targets, adaptation of approach, as required, to ensure continued progress

  • Responsibility for management of digital budgets

  • Work with Head of Communications to develop and implement MQ’s communications strategy across the entire spectrum of communications disciplines, within agreed protocols

  • Support communications project planning, including the development of key messages and roll out of appropriate and consistent language and terminology across all media, in accordance with guidelines

  • Develop ideas and create offers to demonstrate impact of communication activity and raising the profile of MQ charity and its campaigns

Operations

Digital

  • Work with the Head of Communications to design and deliver MQ’s digital strategy. Manage and maintain MQ’s website and social media channels, in accordance with agreed protocols

  • Proactively plan creative, compelling and targeted digital communications materials

Campaigns and supporter development

  • Lead on digital aspects and contribute to overall design and delivery of MQ supporter acquisition awareness and fundraising campaigns, advising MQ’s campaign lead

  • Work in collaboration with Head of Marketing to design and implement supporter journey strategy

Wider communications content development

  • Writing, commissioning and editing communications materials for a range of key MQ audiences for use across all key communications channels

  • Produce draft media releases, articles and statements, as required for MQ communications projects, to be signed off for final release by the Head of Communications

  • Work with fundraising team to support on and offline fundraising communications, to be signed off by the Director of Fundraising and Engagement

  • Approve communications materials in absence of Head of Communications in accordance with protocols

People Leadership

  • Where agreed, act as a senior member of the Communications team in reporting to internal and external stakeholders in absence of Head of Communications

Communications

  • Upholds MQ policies and guidelines across all communications functions and activities; ensure that MQ is compliant with external regulations and Leadership Team is promptly informed of any deviation therefrom

Relationship Management

  • Sourcing and management of all above external agencies, ensuring cost effectiveness and adherence to MQ’s procurement policies and procedures – in line with procurement procedures

  • Provision of digital communications expertise, advice and information to Head of Communications, Senior Leadership Team and Board of Trustees, as required

Provide other support to the MQ team as and when required

Person Specification

Profile

Required skills

Role Specific

  • At least two years experience of working in a communications team within a relevant field, including charity or commercial sector

  • Proven experience of managing digital accounts and using digital platforms to implement campaigns

  • Understanding and experience of using analytics to benchmark communications activity

Commercial

  • Ability to appraise new ideas and proposals and test as appropriate for viability

  • Creative, innovative and adept at concept development, taking ideas into action

  • Strong project management and organisational skills – ability to run a range of simultaneous activities and projects

Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of healthcare communications as shown through work experience and insights
  • An understanding and working knowledge of the UK media and how to measure impact

Experience

  • Experience of day to day agency management preferably within voluntary or community sector

  • Though internal staff management is not initially part of the job; responsibility and opportunity could arise with the development of the business. Some people management skills, experience and natural ability would be beneficial

  • Demonstrable ability to produce high quality work under pressure and to deadline and budget

Qualifications

  • Degree level or equivalent

Personal Attributes and Availablity

  • Willingness to work additional hours according to specific event or campaign demands

  • Availability to travel within the UK and internationally; weekend travel may be necessary

  • Must be eligible to work in the UK
