Mental health research could show how to better manage depression, anxiety

Ask your MP to step up and make our lives better

For millions of us with depression and anxiety, better treatment options would help us, our family and our friends manage our health better. At MQ, for World Mental Health Day on the 10th of October, we’re focusing on the 8.5 million people with anxiety in the UK who could lead more fulfilling lives with better support. We’re focusing on the increasing number of us experiencing depression: One in five adults experienced depressive symptoms in early 2021, more than double that seen before the pandemic. As the pandemic drags on, this number is destined to grow larger.

Why are so many of us struggling without the help we need? Because for decades the UK hasn’t spent nearly enough on research to help develop treatments that could work better.

Consider this: The UK spends 25x more per person on cancer research than on mental health research.

Certainly, no one would ever suggest we should spend less on cancer research. But, because one in four of us will face mental illnesses in our lives, we must demand our officials wake up and commit to funding mental health research. Only then can scientists develop improved treatments and support.

Mark World Mental Health Day by contacting your MP and demanding they act for the millions of us dealing with anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses. Ask them to increase funding for mental health research today so we can have better lives tomorrow.

At MQ, we haven’t waited to act. Through our lobbying efforts we have seen policy changes and more funding for support for school age children. But we need your help to do more. We count on our community of supporters to help us fund mental health research to make our lives better. In fact, by partnering with you, we’ve provided over £21 million to fund groundbreaking research since 2013.

For World Mental Health Day, will you help us move mental health research forward in search of better treatments and support?

Thank you in advance for helping all of us find ways to manage anxiety and depression better in these stressful times.
