Azeem Rafiq and the Impact of Racism on Mental Health

Studies have shown that experiencing racism can make us more likely to develop mental health problems. A 2015 meta-analysis found that racism is twice as likely to affect mental health than physical health, leading to depression, anxiety, PTSD and suicidal thoughts.  

In this episode, Professor Rory and I spoke to MQ ambassador and cricket star, Azeem Rafiq. Azeem played cricket professionally in England for Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

In 2020, Azeem blew the whistle about his experience of racism during his cricket career, which became a major media story in Britain.
