Introducing 2024’s Transdisciplinary Grant Recipients
In 2024, MQ Mental Health Research created a series of transdisciplinary research grants, developed and funded by Wellcome, to support researchers outside psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience to apply bold and novel ideas and methods from their discipline to mental health science. Here are the seven recipients for this year’s grants.Â
The Intersection of Mental Health and Geography
Dr Cheryl McGeachan’s team explored how geography shapes mental health, uncovering deeply personal and complex stories about the importance of “where” alongside “what” in mental health. Their findings reveal that our environment, whether nurturing or challenging, plays a vital role in shaping mental health outcomes.
Understanding the Potential of AI to Help New Mothers
Anaduaka, Oladosu and Katsande found that AI chatbots, designed to support mothers with perinatal depression and anxiety, remain largely unexplored in low and middle income countries, with existing tools often lacking clear consent and privacy guidelines.
Introducing SYNAPSING
MQ is partnering with nine other organisation from across Europe for a new, EU funded research project called SYNAPSING.
Addressing Mental Health Challenges in Juvenile Diabetes
Dr Archana Nepal’s team explored the concept of “pre-depression” in young people with diabetes, an early stage of emotional distress that might lead to depression. Initial findings revealed that “pre-depression” was often viewed as synonymous with depression, limiting its usefulness in reducing stigma or encouraging earlier help-seeking. Workshops with patients, parents, and doctors highlighted the need for improved early mental health support for children with diabetes. The team is now focusing on developing practical methods to enhance mental health support in this vulnerable group.
Exploring the Role of Creative AI in Art Therapy
Dr Alison Pease’s team reviewed efforts to use technology in creative mental health therapies. They found AI tools must support human connection, be accessible, and respect therapy’s sensitive nature while empowering users.
How Anxiety and Depression Affect the Way We Move
Dr Aleksandra Birn-Jeffery’s team reviewed over 9,000 studies and found that depression significantly impacts movement, causing slower walking, shorter steps, and more frequent pauses compared to those without depression.
